JOB SUMMARY

The Junior Project Manager represents an essential core competence that has controlled moderate impact on the success of Fermar Paving Ltd. (“the Company”) Operations. The incumbent is accountable for the successful completion of all assigned Projects, and specifically assigned tasks within larger, complex Projects, within the span the five phases of a project life cycle (initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and closing).

Main responsibilities include: overall project planning, distributing resources, time management, risk management, creating benchmarks, managing the budget, managing staff, and managing relationships with key stakeholders.

The role is accountable for decision-making within the assigned scope of work to ensure the effective planning and utilization of material and human resources; and communication and coordination with other managers and with Customers or their agents. The Junior Project Manager consistently manages one project at a time ranging in size from $1-2M.

The role is a key contact for reviewing and resolving issues and concerns with Project performance, P&L, sub-contractors, suppliers, A/R (invoicing), and claims, to the extent delegated by the role’s direct manager. Senior Project Managers provide oversight and guidance on all projects assigned to the Junior Project Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Oversight

  • Accountable for ensuring all assigned Projects/Project tasks are efficiently and profitably managed and completed.
  • Ensure Company safe operating procedures are being followed for all work undertaken in the completion of projects.
  • Champions the Company’s Safety in the Workplace programs, with a focus on achieving zero accidents/incidents as well as maintaining COR certification.
  • Signing authority with full P & L responsibilities for assigned Projects.

Planning/Financial

  • Accountable for Scheduling and Pricing of all assigned Projects/Tasks.
  • Resolves customer and sub-contractor disputes as expeditiously as possible.
  • Reviews P & L status and cash flow forecasts for Projects, and adjusts as appropriate.
  • Keeps all stakeholders advised on status, progress, and issues on Projects.
  • Analyzes budgets and pricing, provides feedback to Sr. Project Manager and Estimating as required.

Operating

  • Monitors progress of work completed against schedules and take actions as appropriate to ensure on-time/on budget completion of projects.
  • Prepares Progress Certificates and ensures invoicing is timely.
  • Holds weekly meetings with Clients and/or Sub-contractors to review Project status and forecast.
  • Participates in Monthly/Quarterly meetings with senior management to provide progress updates, and profit projections.
  • Attends Project Close Out summary meetings providing details of financials, deficiencies and opportunities to management team upon request.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree. Civil Engineering preferred.
  • College Diploma (Civil Engineering Technician) or Business Administration.
  • PMP designated or in progress
  • Gold Seal certification
  • 1 to 3 years’ experience in a Project Management team (Construction Industry preferred).
  • Financial management: budgeting, quotes and estimates, contract and cost review
  • Working knowledge of project managing contracts for Municipalities and/or Rail, Paving and MTO

WORKING CONDITIONS

Travel Requirements

Weekly within GTA.

Physical Environment

Moderate intensity. 60% office. 40% construction site visits. Some exposure to disagreeable conditions (work sites).

Physical Demands

Moderate. Walking, sitting, lifting less than 5lbs occasionally. Consistent computer/laptop exposure.

Mental Effort

Moderate to High intensity. Occasional challenges that demand higher level impact, focus and occasionally sustained levels of high focus, critical thinking.
