JOB SUMMARY

The Quality Control Field Technician Level 3 is a developmental role that has an important and controlled impact on the success of Fermar Paving Ltd. (“the Company”) Operations, focusing on high quality and risk mitigation.

The role is responsible and accountable for assessing the quality of Asphalt Mix designs and for the quality of workmanship in the field ensuring the product delivered by the Company’s and Sub-contractor crews is in accordance with the required specifications.

The Quality Control Field Technician 3 coordinates testing with the Client’s agent on site to ensure the integrity of the testing, and the materials meet Customer specifications, and MTO and CCIL (Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories) quality standards.

With oversight from Quality Control Field Technician Level 1 or Level 2 this role is responsible to ensure the Quality Testing and Tracking required for each assigned site and project is completed meeting or exceeding quality standards. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership Development

  • The QC Field Tech Level 3 role is responsible for collaborating with the Level 2 Tech from whom the role receives mentoring, training, and support.
  • Discusses personal goals and objectives and on-going performance with QC Field Tech Level 2 and the QC Manager.
  • Champions a zero-tolerance standard and mindset for Safety and completing and submitting all required safety documentation.

Planning/Financial

  • Collaborates with the Level 2 Tech on being assigned progressively complex tasks to develop knowledge and skills.
  • Mitigates risk by identifying potential compliance/conformance/performance discrepancies and recommending corrective actions without delay.

Operating

  • As part of the incumbent’s development, and at the discretion of the Level 1 Technician, may be invited to attend Pre-Construction Meeting, and monthly Progress Meetings with Owners, Project Managers, and the QC Coordinator.
  • Addresses onsite quality issues by informing and directing crews of any workmanship quality issues.
  • Communicates daily with PM and Field Engineers regarding Quality Test results and raises issues or concerns pertaining to the Job.
  • Competently responds to all inquiries regarding Quality testing at meetings and while on Job sites.
  • Maintains a daily log of test results and productivity.
  • Actively participates in Safety Tail Gate meetings given by the Site Superintendent.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • College Diploma – Civil Engineering Technician (2-year minimum).
  • Some experience in QC including Field positions would be an asset.

  • Exhibits critical thinking and the ability to mitigate risks.
  • Ability to work within strict deadlines and under pressure while maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Knowledgeable of and adept at working within government and industry codes, standards, and procedures.

  • Acts independently and with confidence in making decisions about own work for which there are established guidelines. Requires direction occasionally.
  • High level of personal stress tolerance. Ability to retain focus in a fast-paced environment, and prioritize conflicting demands.
  • Solid problem-solving skills. Able to find solutions to complex issues/challenges.
  • Superior communications skills. Able to build strong working relationships with other professionals within and outside the Company.

Physical Environment

Moderate intensity. 100% construction site

Physical Demands

Low to Moderate intensity. Walking, sitting, standing and 
lifting up to 25 kilos. Consistent computer/laptop 
exposure. Safety Sensitive environment. Lifting up to
20-25 lbs. on site and moving the samples around.

Mental Effort

Moderate intensity. Occasional challenges that demand higher level impact risk, focus.
