JOB SUMMARY

The Quality Control Lab Technician Level 3 is a developmental role that has an important and controlled impact on the success of Fermar Paving Ltd. (“the Company”) Operations.

The role is responsible for daily work of the QC Laboratory Team as assigned by the Level 1 Lab Tech. This includes participating in creating and testing Asphalt Mixes during production and in paving operations. Production of high quality Asphalt Mixes at the Albion and Dixie plants is at the heart of the Company’s reputation and profitability.

The role supports the QC Lab’s work in designing, testing, monitoring and maintaining high quality asphalt mixes that meet or exceed Customer specifications, and MTO and CCIL (Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories) quality standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Operating

  • On a daily basis ensures Mixes are performing reliably to the approved Contract provisions by on-going testing in the Lab with direct oversight by senior QC Lab Technicians.
  • Logs work completed, tests completed, materials, dates, times and results.
  • Competently responds to all inquiries regarding Quality testing.
  • Continuously monitors and analyzes data to ensure conformance and compliance with all applicable codes and standards.
  • Actively participates in weekly Tail Gate meetings.

Safety

  • Demonstrates working knowledge of and complies with all Safety rules and procedures for the Laboratory operation and equipment. Reports discrepancies/concerns/issues to Lab Tech Level 1.

Continuous Improvement

  • Continuously develops technical skills through mentorship with senior Quality Control Lab Technicians and investing in training required to obtain required certification.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • College Diploma – Civil Engineering (3 year minimum).
  • Experience (1-6 months) working in QC laboratories (e.g., Intern/Coop positions during College).
  • Experience with performing tests on materials (e.g., Aggregates).

Demonstrated Management Skills

  • Exhibits critical thinking and the ability to mitigate risks.
  • Ability to work within strict deadlines and under pressure while maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Knowledgeable of and adept at working within government and industry codes, standards, and procedures.
  • Must obtain CCIL certification to conduct testing within 2 years.

  • High level of personal stress tolerance. Ability to retain focus in a fast-paced environment, and prioritize conflicting demands.
  • Effective Problem Solving skills. Able to find solutions to complex issues/challenges.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Travel Requirements

GTA (infrequent).

Physical Environment

Safety Sensitive: 95% in the Lab. 5% in the yard. PPE required. Exposure to chemicals and dust. Heavy truck traffic when in the yard. Safety Training and PPE provided.

Physical Demands

Moderate to High intensity. Walking, sitting, standing and 
lifting samples of 20kg. Consistent computer/laptop 
exposure. Controlled Safety Sensitive environment

Mental Effort

Moderate intensity. Occasional challenges that demand higher level impact risk, focus.
