DESCRIPTION

The Metrolinx/ GO Transit Barrie Corridor widening allows for bi-directional train movements all day from York University GO Station and the Rutherford GO Station and encompassing all stations along the way. This double track expansion was first tendered under the Region Express Rail program and all work had to be completed while maintaining the live track system.

As the portion of the work to be done was situated in and around a watercourse , careful attention was paid to ensuring that the river was undisturbed. As such, sheet piling was used to retain the sides of the river where work was being performed to install a culvert. In addition to same, multiple retaining walls were erected, work was performed within close proximity to existing shoreline armouring as well as grading was undertaken in areas where steep slopes existed and sculpting of same was required. Along with the emphasis on ensuring the watercourse was protected during construction, new track was constructed, electrical was undertaken for signaling works and sewers as well as culverts were constructed.
